Two COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the FDA. Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) is FDA approved for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 in individuals 16 and older. Moderna (Spikevax) is FDA approved for individuals 18 and older. Pfizer-BioNTech also has Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for two doses in children ages 5-15. The Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine has received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for individuals 18 and older.
Pfizer-BioNTech has also been issued Emergency Use Authorization for a third primary series dose, or additional dose, in certain individuals 5 and older who are moderate to severely immunocompromised. Moderna has received Emergency Use Authorization for an additional dose in certain immunocompromised individuals 18 and older.
The FDA also has extended its Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to include a single booster shot for individuals 12 and older, as well as for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to include a booster shot for people 18 and older. The booster shot is recommended for those who received the initial series of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at least five months ago and for those who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago.
Both Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) and Moderna (Spikevax) vaccines require two shots initially. The Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine requires just one shot. For moderate to severely immunocompromised individuals who have completed their two-dose series of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, a third dose is recommended by the CDC for the best protection.
