Now approved for children, teens, and adults.
Schedule vaccineCDC recommends that people ages 5 years and older receive one updated (bivalent) booster if it has been at least 2 months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose, whether that was: their final primary series dose, or an original (monovalent) booster.
People who have gotten more than one original (monovalent) booster are also recommended to get an updated (bivalent) booster.
Boosters are an important part of protecting yourself from getting seriously ill or dying from COVID-19. They are recommended for most people. If you recently had COVID-19, you may consider delaying your next vaccine dose (whether a primary dose or booster) by 3 months from when your symptoms started or, if you had no symptoms, when you first received a positive test.
Schedule vaccineA booster dose is recommended when the immune response to the initial 2-dose series of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has likely decreased over time.
The CDC recommends a booster dose for individuals ages 12+ who completed their primary series of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at least 5 months ago. Ages 12–17 years old can only get a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster. For ages 18+, a booster dose of either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna is preferred in most situations.
Immunocompromised people may receive a booster dose at least 3 months after their primary series.
Moderately to severely immunocompromised people may build low or no immunity against COVID-19 from their initial 2-dose series. The CDC recommends an additional dose at least 28 days after the completion of the initial 2-dose series to provide more protection against serious and life-threatening COVID-19 illness.
The CDC recommends an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine for moderately to severely immunocompromised people ages 5+, including people who have:
A booster dose is recommended when the immune response to the initial 2-dose series of the Moderna vaccine has likely decreased over time.
The CDC recommends a booster dose for individuals ages 18+ who completed their
primary series of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at least 5 months ago. Schedule now
your Moderna booster dose.Immunocompromised people may receive a booster dose at
least 3 months after completing the primary series.
Immunocompromised people may receive a booster dose at least 3 months after their primary series.
Moderately to severely immunocompromised people may build low immunity against COVID-19 from their initial 2-dose series. The CDC recommends an additional dose at least 28 days after the completion of the initial 2-dose series to provide more protection against serious and life-threatening COVID-19 illness.
The CDC recommends an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine for moderately to severely immunocompromised people ages 18+, including people who have:
According to updated CDC recommendations, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are preferred for COVID-19 vaccine primary and booster doses over the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine.
The CDC recommends a booster dose for individuals ages 18+ who received their primary dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at least 2 months ago.
Moderately to severely immunocompromised people may build low immunity against COVID-19 from their initial shot. The CDC recommends an additional dose of either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna (mRNA vaccine) at least 28 days after the completion of the initial shot to provide more protection against serious and life-threatening COVID-19 illness.
The CDC recommends an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine for moderately to severely immunocompromised people ages 18+, including people who have:

An additional dose is recommended for some individuals to provide added protection against serious and life-threatening COVID-19 illness. Sometimes people, including those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised, do not build enough protection against COVID-19 from their initial two doses of an mRNA vaccine, which includes Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) and Moderna (Spikevax) vaccines. An additional dose, given at least 28 days after completion of the initial two-dose series, is shown to improve an immune response in those individuals.
A booster shot is recommended for fully vaccinated individuals 12 and older. Evidence suggests that the immune response to COVID-19 vaccines likely decreases over time, and a booster shot offers improved protection against COVID-19.
Whether you are eligible to get a booster shot depends on which vaccine you initially received and how long ago you received it.
A booster shot is recommended at least five months after completion of the initial series.
A booster shot is recommended at least five months after completion of the initial series.
A booster shot is recommended at least two months after the initial shot.
Individuals 18 and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised and have completed their initial mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series as well as received an additional dose may also receive a booster dose of any COVID-19 vaccine.
Visit the CDC to learn more about the recommendation of an additional dose or booster shot.
Federal guidelines recommend that fully vaccinated people get a booster shot after a specified amount of time has passed since their initial vaccination.
Boosters are recommended for individuals 12 and older who:
Boosters are recommended for individuals 12 and older who:
Individuals 18 and older who are eligible for a booster dose may receive the same brand of vaccine they received initially but are not required to. A person can choose to get a booster from a different brand than their initial vaccine. For example, if you received the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) one-shot vaccine initially, you can get a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna booster. People ages 12 to 17 who got the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine can only get the Pfizer-BioNTech booster.
Kids younger than 12 are not eligible for a booster shot at this time.
CDC studies show that moderately to severely immunocompromised people may not build the same levels of immunity against COVID-19 after vaccination as non-immunocompromised people. Individuals with low or no protection after 2 doses of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are more vulnerable to serious COVID-19 illness. The CDC recommends an additional dose for improved protection against COVID-19 after the initial 2 doses of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and to prevent life-threatening COVID-19 illness. There is currently not enough data to determine whether an additional dose is recommended for immunocompromised people who received the Johnson & Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine.
Individuals 18 and older who are eligible for a booster shot may receive the same brand of vaccine they received initially but are not required to. A person can choose to get a booster from a different brand than their initial vaccine. For example, if you received the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) one-shot vaccine initially, you can get a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna booster. People ages 12 to 17 can only receive Pfizer-BioNTech as a booster.
Certain individuals 12 and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised and have completed their initial mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series as well as received an additional dose may also receive a booster dose of any COVID-19 vaccine.
Visit the CDC to learn more about the recommendation of an additional dose or booster shot.
Two COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the FDA. Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) is FDA approved for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 in individuals 16 and older. Moderna (Spikevax) is FDA approved for individuals 18 and older. Pfizer-BioNTech also has Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for two doses in children ages 5-15. The Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine has received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for individuals 18 and older.
Pfizer-BioNTech has also been issued Emergency Use Authorization for a third primary series dose, or additional dose, in certain individuals 5 and older who are moderate to severely immunocompromised. Moderna has received Emergency Use Authorization for an additional dose in certain immunocompromised individuals 18 and older.
The FDA also has extended its Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to include a single booster shot for individuals 12 and older, as well as for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to include a booster shot for people 18 and older. The booster shot is recommended for those who received the initial series of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at least five months ago and for those who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago.
Both Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) and Moderna (Spikevax) vaccines require two shots initially. The Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine requires just one shot. For moderate to severely immunocompromised individuals who have completed their two-dose series of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, a third dose is recommended by the CDC for the best protection. The third dose should be administered 28 days or more after the second dose.
Some moderate to severely immunocompromised people 12 and older who received their third Pfizer-BioNTech dose at least five months ago are eligible to receive a booster shot (fourth dose). Some immunocompromised people 18 and older who received their third Moderna vaccine dose at least five months ago are eligible for a booster shot.
The CDC recommends that vaccinated people 12 and older who are eligible to receive a booster shot get one. Those eligible for a booster include individuals:
For people 18 and older, it’s not necessary to get a booster from the brand of vaccine initially received. You can choose Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty), Moderna (Spikevax) or Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) as your booster dose. Eligible individuals younger than 18 can only get Pfizer-BioNTech as a booster.
Eligible individuals can schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment at select The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy locations.
Once you schedule your appointments, you’ll receive a confirmation and vaccination consent form via email. Bring the completed vaccination consent form to your scheduled appointment (or fill it out in store). A parent or guardian must be present at appointments for all minors.
Individuals who receive the Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) or the Moderna (Spikevax) COVID-19 vaccine are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the second dose. Individuals who received a single shot of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine are considered fully vaccinated.
An additional dose of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna is recommended for some moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals. The additional dose should be given at least 28 days after the initial two-dose series.
Evidence suggests that immune response to the vaccines may wane over time, and the CDC recommends that vaccinated people receive a booster shot when they become eligible.
The following are eligible to get a booster shot:
Anyone 18 and older can receive any of the three available COVID-19 vaccines as a booster dose, no matter which brand they received initially. For example, if you received the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine initially, you have the option to receive Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna for your booster. Eligible individuals younger than 18 who received the Pfizer-BioNTech for the initial vaccine must receive the Pfizer-BioNTech as a booster.
COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost to you at Walgreens. They are provided at no cost to individuals 5 and older who are living in the United States, regardless of immigration status. You do not need to have health insurance to get a COVID-19 vaccine at no cost.
According to the CDC and FDA, adverse reactions are usually mild to moderate in intensity and resolve within a few days. The most common adverse reactions reported after vaccination in clinical studies included:
While the CDC advises that getting any COVID-19 vaccine is better than not getting vaccinated, the agency now recommends receiving an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) which is preferred over the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine.
The CDC points to vaccine effectiveness, vaccine safety and abundant vaccine supply as reasons for why it is recommending Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will continue to be available to those who are unable to, don’t have access to or prefer not to receive an mRNA vaccine.
